If you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground regarding how the blockchain is revolutionising art, you’ll have heard of NFTs. Standing for non-fungible tokens, these digital assets are shaking up how creatives buy and sell work. Art photography is no exception, and thanks to a recently-launched collection by Fellowship, the biggest and hottest names in the industry have been made available via the blockchain.
Marking what it claims to be a “turning point for photography on the blockchain”, Fellowship’s latest series of NFT exhibitions includes the likes of Joel Meyerowitz, Laurie Simmons, Guy Bourdin, László Moholy-Nagy, Gregory Crewdson, Katy Grannan, Pieter Hugo, Joel Sternfeld, Mitch Epstein and Hank Willis Thomas.

Founded by a group of artists, collectors and thought leaders, Fellowship invites audiences worldwide to discover and collect art photography via Web3. Thanks to hosting and distributing its featured photographers via blockchain, Fellowship also promises to be a new path for artists to present their work.
Fellowship commissions and exhibits its photographers in an accessible way through a rotating spotlight of the best photographic talent, including work from seminal creatives to the breakthrough artists of tomorrow. Its latest NFT auction kicks off today and will present three artworks. These include Gregory Crewdson: Untitled (2002) from the series Dream House; Woman in Bathroom (2013) from the series Cathedral of the Pines, and Redemption Center (2018-2019) from the series An Eclipse of Moths.
After this, Crewdson’s exhibition will be followed by a series of weekly auctions by Guy Bourdin, Katy Grannan, Joel Sternfeld, László Moholy-Nagy, Pieter Hugo, Hank Willis Thomas, Mitch Epstein, Joel Meyerowitz and Laurie Simmons.

“We believe the digital art market is just getting started,” explains the Founders of Fellowship. “We looked around and didn’t see a space that showed up for artists, so we built it. Fellowship is creating new opportunities and best practices for photographers at every stage in their career to create, exhibit and reach new audiences via the virtual realm.
“We’re pushing photography forward by offering an extension of the artist’s presentation model beyond prints. We’ve imagined a future where everyone can visit our collection to be inspired by the world’s best photography.”

American photographer Joel Meyerowitz adds: “Photography is the only art form that constantly refreshes itself through technological changes while simultaneously sharing these changes with the global population. It is our world’s most democratic art form.
“Now, we have the NFT. A remarkable new way to collect the great images of the past and the present, with the exception that now one can have only a single minted image, rather than an unlimited number of prints. The rarity that photography collectors have always sought is now a reality.”
